Do you crave chocolate all day? Team…come in for the huddle!
Hey! Hey, health enthusiasts! It’s your favorite holistic nutrition and health coach, Coach Michele Smits! Are you trying to shake your chocolate habit? Well…today, we are talking about a delightful treat that might help you do just that and it usually flys under the radar. It’s CAROB! What is carob you ask…..it is a natural legume that grows in the Mediterranean and is used as a chocolate substitute! WHAT?! YES! Now, I am allergic to chocolate, so this is a true delight for people like me….but….this natural chocolate substitute can be a huge help and love for chocolate lovers too!
First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room for many people, women especially suffer from migraines. Chocolate can be a notorious trigger for those debilitating headaches, however carob has a migraine-friendly profile. There is no theobromine in it! That is the chemical that triggers migraines. So you get to have a stress free indulgence. (Fun fact: That is also the chemical that makes chocolate toxic to dog.) (And here is my favorite migraine be gone balm! It helps me personally every single time!)
But that’s not all – carob is packed with nutrients that’ll make your body dance with joy! It’s loaded with calcium, magnesium, and potassium, essential minerals for bone health and muscle function. Plus, it’s a fantastic source of fiber, aiding in digestion and keeping you feeling satisfied for longer. Did I mention…it’s low in fat?
Let’s not forget about those powerful antioxidants! Carob is bursting with these little warriors, helping to combat oxidative stress and protect you at the cellular level from cell damage.
So, how can you use it? Well you can substitute for cocoa while baking. Just make sure to also reduce the sugar, because it is naturally sweet. However, here is how I like to enjoy it….a Carob latte! The recipe is below, but oh my goodness….I just love to make this using unsweetened vanilla almond milk and my favorite frother. This frother is legit! It warms the milk too! I also have a handheld one not as colorful as the ones I linked here, but I always opt to use my Capresso!
Remember, my dear wellness warriors, it’s all about balance and finding joy in nourishing your body with balance and wholesome goodness. So why not give carob a try? Your taste buds and your health just might thank you for it!
It’s time to break our huddle….
Now go out there and…..
CRUSH IT!
